 Yet once a year, when the Sprint Cup Series visits Sonoma Raceway, Kenseth looks more akin to a rookie than the champion he is. In 13 career starts on the 12-turn, 1.99-mile circuit, he has finished in the top 10 just once and his average finish of 20.8 is the worst out of any track he competes on.

"It's always a challenging weekend, but I am looking forward to it," Kenseth said Friday at Sonoma. "... It hasn't been my best track by any means.

For the 2013 event, those races have been expanded to 50 laps each and will have a completely new format. Last year used practice times the day before to set the grid for each race with the slowest teams in the first heat, midpack in the second heat and fastest teams in the final heat.

Saturday heat races will pay championship points and set the starting lineup for Sunday's IndyCar race.Texas winner Helio Castroneves set a new single-lap record at Iowa Speedway of 185.687 mph and will have the pole for the third and final IndyCar heat race on Saturday afternoon.

Heat races will return to Iowa Speedway for this weekend's IndyCar event but will be 20 laps longer and also pay championship points.Perhaps wanting to add some excitement to their standard oval track qualifying procedure or as an alternative to the flawed Texas Motor Speedway Saturday doubleheader, three 30-lap heat races were created to set the grid for the 2012 race.

Ed Carpenter and Scott Dixon are on pole for the two preliminary heat races. Dario Franchitti (20th) and Ryan Hunter-Reay (22nd) were among those with poor qualifying laps. Ana Beatriz did not set a time.The rest of the top six automatically qualifying for the final heat include Marco Andretti, Will Power, Tony Kanaan, James Hinchcliffe and Oriol Servia.
